Life is busy. Busy busy busy. That's a good thing though..especially on a mission. I have really enjoyed my time here in Lawrence and have been praying that I will stay another transfer. Next Tuesday we have transfers. Yes..right before Thanksgiving! We have many families who have invited us to be at their house for Thanksgiving so I definitely feel loved.
This past week we have gotten two calls from some random people stranded. One lady was panicing because they were stuck in Oklahoma without money for a motel and wanted us to find help. I have no idea how they got our number. We were able to find through someone looking up on mormon.org the bishops number in the town she was in. I figure it all worked out since she didn't call back. Then a few days later it happens again! A lady calls up on veterans day in a panic because her son is stuck in Wichita and needs to get to military training. Sister Robinson and I just looked at each other and laughed saying we didn't know we signed up for this kind of work but I remember similiar situations happening to John Morgan when he was bishop.
Last night we received a voicemail from President Van Komen informing us of the death of Sister Cari Kinkead. I lived with the Kinkeads this past summer in Haysville, Ks. At first I was shocked and couldn't believe she died. I didn't really know what to think and then I just began to cry. She was only 51 years old. While I lived at their house she was going to the doctors because she wasn't feeling all that great. Her doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong. She thought she might need surgery and then when she got home she told us she didn't and they were going to do some more tests. Obviously they didn't find out what was wrong because she unexpectly died on Saturday evening. Brother and Sister Kinkead have two children, Kelly(son 30) and Kasey (daughter 26). If you would please keep Brother Kindkead and their family in your prayers I would appreciate it. I'm waiting to hear when the funeral is so I can attend. I can't imagine what it would be like to have a loved one die and not have a sure knowledge that you will see them again or understand what happens to them. I am so grateful to know we don't lose them, we'll see them again. Not that it is easy but it's easier.
On a lighter and more positive note Elder Richard G. Scott is coming this Friday. On Saturday we will have an all-mission conference with him and shake his hand. Sunday morning us missionaries, our investigators, recent converts and some less-actives of the Topeka Stake will have a special 1 hr meeting with him! How awesome is that? Only us missionaries here in Topeka area get this with those we’re teaching! I'm excited and happy to be here at this time.
Thank you so so much for all of the birthday presents that will hopefully be arriving soon! The Willis' who are feeding us tomorrow are making me my usual fun-fetti(spelling?) cake :)
Things are going really well with Brian and Eli. Brian last week said, "I CAN'T wait for January because 1. I'm getting baptized and 2. The new lego set I want comes out!!!" That was hilarious. Eli is all set to be baptized for the 27th of this month.
Love,
Sister Powell
